The Institute of Media Studies unites the disciplines Photography, Graphic Design, Interface Cultures, Media Technology and Education, Media Theories and Time-based Media in one transdisciplinary teaching and research hub. All curricula offer students creative and reflective approaches to media culture and artistic-scientific research practice. The Institute organises two bachelor programmes – Graphic Design and Photography (6 semesters) and Time-based and Interactive Media (6 semesters) – as well as the artistic-scientific master programmes Interface Cultures (4 semesters) and Time-based Media (4 semesters) and the scientific master programme Media Culture and Art Theories (4 semesters, cross-institutional).
The master programme Graphic Design and Photography is currently being developed and will be launched in autumn 2009.
Artistic and scientific projects in the fields of image and sound, interactivity, graphic and communication design, analog and digital photography, film/video, performative media and time-based art are implemented in co-operation with partners inside and outside the University, such as Ars Electronica, Future Lab, Lentos Art Museum or Medienwerkstatt Wien. The focus is on project- and team-oriented work with a wide variety of formats, materials and media. Constant references to media history, cultural and political processes as well as transmedial strategies foster independent approaches to visual, audio and multisensory forms and methods of expression, production and presentation.
