The Bachelor and Masterprogramme Space & Design STRATEGIES has established itself at the Kunstuniversität Linz as an European novelty. Key elements of the programme include crossover conceptual and implementation-oriented tasks situated at the interfaces of art, architecture, design and digital media.
The goal of the program is clear: research-based design for a better world. Towards this purpose, every student is to acquire high flexibility and improvisation skills for strategies in a vehemently changing society.
„Some major distinctions in thinking and approach exist on the different scales of design, as I discovered at the various universities I taught. A spatial planner thinks more democratically and works from the concept of the average man, personal tinged principles are not appreciated. An urban designer thinks organizationally and in a very abstract manner, with little imaginative thought for personal everyday life experiences. An architect works is based on his intellect. The concept of a design is maintained up to its very completion, even if the building does not match the original intention anymore. A designer on the other hand, works from his feelings and emotions. A design is much more likely to end up in the waste bin because it is not beautiful, or because it does not match what it should express. An artist ultimately, works in a much more personal matter, more autobiographical and therefor much more activistic – reacting directly from the personal world of experiences. So teaching or studying space&design STRATEGIES at an art university, this variety of thinking should be brought together. Focused on current agents and responsive to local issues, the study could be positioned somewhere between ‚society-shape‘, ‚sustainable urbanism‘ and ‚art-activism‘.“
