Master Programme Media Culture and Art Theories

Duration of programme: 4 semesters
The scientific master programme “Media Culture and Art Theories” (German acronym MKKT) was conceived to take account of the complexities of media-related, artistic and cultural forms of expression and use. The curriculum links theory and practice, research and artistic design processes and is offered on a trans-institutional basis taking the form of three disciplines: “Media Theories” (at the Institute of Media Design), “Art History/Art Theory with a Gender Studies focus” and “Cultural Studies” (both at the Institute of Fine Arts and Cultural Studies). The art-oriented programmes of Kunstuniversität Linz are integrated into the courses and curriculum of MKKT. 

It is the objective of the programme to impart in-depth academic education in media culture and art theories with a firm emphasis on interdiscursive, transcultural, gender-political and perception theory-driven approaches to work and research. The joint development and discussion of media-cultural and art-theoretical positions enables students to evolve a differentiated understanding of the productions and works of media culture and art and to choose and find suitable positions in both specific academic disciplines and transdisciplinary areas, thus evolving their own, unique academic profiles. Students are enabled to develop independent research perspectives and methods of problem solution and to reflect critically on artistic and scientific positions characterising the media/cultural scene. This creates a basis for complex media-cultural projects and theoretical or specifically themed (research) work. Advanced qualification within the scope of a PhD programme is encouraged.

The thematic focuses of the programme are provided by three basic modules: “History and Analysis of Media Culture and Art”, “Transdisciplinarity” and “Cultural Systems, Practices and Apparatuses”, which serve to examine and discuss theoretical, historical and systematic questions. In this, students acquire knowledge and skills in the areas of scientific methodology, interdisciplinary work, argumentation strategies, media analysis, processes of reading, writing and text management, forms of presentation and publication, and aesthetics of effect. In addition to specialised knowledge in the fields of established techniques and media formats (photography, film, TV, time-based art, etc.), the new digital and interactive media (net art, weblogs, computer games, etc.) are covered as well. Moreover, a module may be chosen from the master programmes “Time-based Media”, “Visual Communication” and “Interface Cultures” to set an additional art-oriented focus.

Career options offered by the MKKT master programme may be identified both in established work areas involving media culture, the arts and art history and in newly emerging, future-oriented professions in the digital media. Potential activity areas include scientific and artistic curating and editing, professions concerned with media design and media editing, programme development and media production, concept development for festivals and (media-) cultural events and their organisation, as well as aesthetic, analytical, editorial and production-oriented activities within the scope of online culture. Moreover, an MKKT degree also enables graduates to embark on an academic career in media, art and/or cultural studies.
