In October 2006, the Institute of Media Design launched its bachelor programme Time-based and Interactive Media (abbreviated as TIME).
The bachelor programme Time-based and Interactive Media – a programme with artistic orientation – provides comprehensive training in digital media theory, technology and design and focuses on the following two priority areas:
In both priority areas, a key role is assigned to tackling specific, concrete content. In addition to offering an in-depth, complete basic course in the field of digital media, this bachelor programme lays the foundation and prepares the ground for the master programmes Time-based Media, Interface Cultures, Visual Communication and Media Culture and Art Theories at Kunstuniversität Linz or for similar master programmes at other universities.
To meet the standards of in-depth and comprehensive training, digital media are viewed not only as technical-disseminative media; rather, their specific potential for being shaped and designed as well as their inherent media-theoretical, socio-cultural, political and economic aspects are equally addressed. Students are to acquire critical openness towards social, societal, political and artistic problem complexes and to analyse artistic production for its societal relevance and ideological-political implications.
In addition to learning to find their way around the complex field of digital media, students should above all determine their own position and establish their own profile. After all, any knowledge about the technical possibilities immanent in digital media is irrelevant without the content conveyed through these media. For this reason, it is a key concern of the programme to nurture the development of students’ personalities and their ability to express themselves, to formulate, streamline and present their own ideas. Since digital media projects as a rule are based on a division of tasks among numerous actors, great emphasis is placed on the capacity of students to work within a team, communicate and participate actively in shared-task processes.
