Department for Sculpture -Transmedial Space, Kunstuniversität Linz As is well known, many artists from around the world flock to Berlin because of cheap rent, availability of space, a relatively liberal and secure environment, and the manifold cultural scene the city has to offer. That said, many of them get their money from anywhere but Berlin - exhibiting and commuting to teaching jobs elsewhere, or waiting for dad's transfer. How long will that work? Can Berlin continue as a 'mere' safe haven from the dreadmills of London or New York? Or will it transform into a dreadmill of its own? Or is there a third option, a different kind of socio-economic environment that will differ from the models of the big financial centres?
