Art based on blockchain is often highly technical and conceptual and demands an intrinsic explanation. In parallel, the artistic practices linked to blockchain and the mining process open new narratives closely associated with the concept of trust, the generation of value, self-managed systems, proof-of-work alternatives, post-human societies and the ecological impact. These discourses lead us to ask ourselves: What types of dialogues does blockchain-based art open? What narratives predominate? What are the intentions of artists who work with cryptocurrencies? How can art practices visualise the hidden side of blockchain? Martín Nadal is an artist/developer studying Interface Cultures at the Kunstuniversität Linz. In recent years, he has collaborated in a variety of projects dealing with cryptocurrencies, blockchain, IoT, etc., and taught several art- and technology-related workshops. His works have been shown at Visualizar 11, Medialab Prado in Madrid, the Ars Electronica festival and the Art Meets Radical Openness Festival in Linz, Settimana della Scienza in Genoa and at the IAMAS – Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences in Ogakishi.
martinnadal.eu César Escudero Andaluz is an artist and researcher focused on Human-Computer Interaction, interface criticism, digital culture and its social and political effects. His work spans image-making, sculpture, videogame, installation, networked culture, IoT, robotics, media archaeology. Since 2011, he has been a researcher at the Kunstuniversität Linz in the Interface Culture LAB. His artworks have been shown at international electronic-art events, museums, galleries and conferences including the Ars Electronica Center (AT), ZKM (DE), ISMAR2015 (JP), WRO2015 (PL), Transnumeriques (FR), Hangar.org (ES), KIKK (BE), Rome Media Art Festival (IT) and ADAF (GR).

Critical thinkers, artists, researchers, activists, and geeks in search of other economies and financial discourses for a fair society. These are dark times for the economy, as offshore finance wreaks havoc in the very fabric of cities and communities, and crypto-companies find their own tax havens. But the economy is not only in the hands of faceless corporations and cryptocurrency speculators. MoneyLab explores the imaginaries of artists, researchers, activists, and geeks in search for other possible economies, and interrogates a different financial discourse. It asks: can we use technology critically to support alternative values of cooperation and commoning in a world that is dominated by individualism and competition? MoneyLab #8 features examples far from the mainstream media spotlight. It zooms in on the effects of offshore finance and explores counter-experiments in the realms of housing, care work, and blockchain technology. Can self-organised care networks strengthen neighbourhoods? What would social housing look like if it was turned into the cornerstone of the economy? Who is building local systems that can stand up against the financialisation of housing? MoneyLab #8 sheds light onto radical strategies for self-organisation, and pushes on towards new and collective futures for resilient local communities.
