Die ÖH lädt zum 5 Uhr Tee mit Karel van Laere

Karel van Laere makes both video art and live performances.

In his work, the central theme is made up of opposing human movement to mechanical movement. Using electric hoists Van Laere shows the helplessness of the human body. From his work one can distil the ambition to amaze the viewer with new perspectives and different ways of looking.

With his video artwork “Impact” he won the first prize at the Taoyuan Contemporary Art Award in Taiwan in 2013. In November 2014 Karel van Laere was awarded the Piket Art Prize for young artists in The Hague.

His latest video installation Slow Rise (made in Taiwan) has toured internationally and was shown at The Eye Film Museum in Amsterdam and The Rossana Orlandi Gallery in Milan.

After graduating as a performer at the Maastricht Theatre Academy in 2012, Van Laere continued his education at the Taipei National University of the Arts in Taiwan. Currently he works on several new video works and live performances in his studio in The Hague.

Van Laere has previously visited Linz during Linz Cultural Capital 09, when he designed the costumes for the newly written opera ‘Kepler’ by Philip Glass. The opera, directed by Peter Missotten, premiered at the Landes Theater Linz and was the highlight of Van Laere’s career as a costume designer.Check out his work at:
